Social media - a noisy revolution!

Went to a really good event organised by the SLA last night. Antony Mayfield of Spannerworks did an excellent job outlining exactly what we mean by social media (or social networking) and the potential impact new media will have on organisations.  The message is clear - organisations have to embrace these new ways of publishing and distributing information.  Afterwards we all proved what excellent face-to-face (and noisy) social networkers we are over a glass of wine.

It's certainly true that they need to embrace and use these new methods of distributing data, but that's only one side of the coin. With the advantages of Web 2.0 resources organizations are going to need to let go of some long held and cherished beliefs. Speed becomes ever more important, 'good enough' is good enough, customers become collaborators and each member of staff needs to be treated both as part of a community AND as an individual.

While Web 2.0 resources are excellent, in order to truly embrace them an organization needs to make many drastic changes. The question becomes - can they do that?
